What Goes Up
What goes up is one of the most confusing films that I have seen in quite a long time. The film is about a morally challenged New York reporter, Campbell Babbitt played by actor Steve Coogan, who learns life lessons from a group of dysfunctional students hile covering the a story about a local hometown hero.
I came into this movie with my eyes open and to tell you the truth, I thought I would really like a movie about a reporter doing his job and that was covering this hometown hero story. The thing is it is all about how screwed up he is and then teaming up with a group of dysfunctional students in this small town. Babbitt, is just nuts as he has fallen in love with one of his subjects that he was writing about and even after her death, he continues to write about this person known only as Angel in the film.
His editor, sends him to this small town to cover the first teacher in space and he finds out that a friend from college has killed himself. His friend, is a teacher and Babbitt kind of becomes a replacement for his old friend.
His friend, is supposed to have possibly had a sexual relationship with one of the girls and he got caught and that is why he killed himself. But later on in the movie, we find out that he may have been killed but the writer never actually informs the audience.
The one great thing with this movie is that former Disney Channel star Hillary Duff actually has a role where she is not a teen pop star or a teen. This is one of Ms. Duff’s best adult performances and I do not consider her performance in War Inc her best performance and really who saw that movie did you? If so tell me if you liked it.
Duff, plays one of the dysfunctional kids in this small city and she plays it off wonderfully as she is now and adult and needs to get a fanbase that is older then the Disney Channel audience and if enough people see this movie when it opens May 29th, I think she may have been able to get away from the teen category and could get some meatier roles out of it.
Also, the funny thing is that Babbitt actually wins the Pulitzer Price for his stories about Angel and this is kind of weird since she has been dead for the last 2 stories he has written about her and nobody even his editor has fact checked this? He would lose his price if this was actually real.
See It: A great movie that you will enjoy from beginning to end
Rent It: A movie that is not great but its not horrible and you will enjoy it at home.
Skip It: Nothing about this movie is good and it is best to see it on TV if you must.
My conclusion for this movie would be to rent it when it comes to your local video store. I say this because of Hillary Duffs performance is actually really good. If you do see this movie in a theater, you will come out disappointed and confused.
